Bassinet to Crib: How to Make the Move Without Changing Everything at Once

A calm, one-change-at-a-time plan for the move to a bigger bed — plus the one thing worth measuring first.

A bassinet has a short career. It arrives before the baby does, it lives beside the bed for a few months, and then one week it quietly stops being the right size. That's the week people start searching, and they almost always type the same three words: bassinet to crib.

One clarification first, because search results mix two opposite journeys. This article is about the move into a crib, from a bassinet. Not the later move out of one, into a toddler bed. Different age, different problem, different article.

And the caveat, said once and meant throughout: this is a practical guide, not medical advice. Anything about your own baby — weight, growth, or whether the timing is right for them — belongs with your pediatrician.

When to Transition From Bassinet to Crib

The Bassinet Tells You Before the Calendar Does

Every bassinet has a printed limit: a weight, and usually a line about what happens once a baby can roll or push up on their hands and knees. Those two lines are the real trigger for most families — the bassinet is outgrown before anyone has decided anything.

Two ordinary tells go with it: the baby's head is reaching one end, or you've started hearing them shift and bump the sides. Neither is an emergency — both just mean the next bed is now the right bed.

The Month Numbers Belong to a Different Search

People expect an age here, and there isn't a widely agreed one. Search almost any version of when to move a baby to a crib and very little comes back with a month attached.

Where month numbers do appear is a different phrase entirely: sleep regression. There they're specific and heavily searched — four months, six, seven — and 4 month sleep regression is climbing faster than the rest.

That distinction saves a lot of worry. If a hard week arrives around four months, the bigger bed may have nothing to do with it, and going back to the bassinet rarely fixes it.

Read the Pediatric Guidance, Then Ask Your Own Pediatrician

We make personalized gifts, not medical guidance, so the useful thing we can do is point you at the people who do. The American Academy of Pediatrics keeps a room-by-room checklist for families setting up a nursery: the AAP nursery checklist. The AAP also has a separate guide on settling a baby into a new bed: the AAP guide for parents. And the NICHD publishes a plain list of what an approved crib environment should and shouldn't contain: the NICHD guidance.

Then ask your pediatrician, the only person here who knows your baby.

How to Transition Baby to Crib in Five Unremarkable Steps

The families who describe this as easy did the same thing: changed one variable at a time, and made none of it feel like an event.

1. Start in Daylight, Not in the Evening

A bigger bed is easier to meet during the day — a few contented minutes on their back with you leaning over the rail, a diaper change on the same mattress. That counts as an introduction, and it costs you no evening.

It's also the honest answer to the most-searched frustration in this whole topic: baby won't nap in crib. Very often the first meeting happened at the hardest hour of the day.

2. Keep One Thing Exactly the Same

Change the bed, keep everything else: the same order of events, the same lighting, the same person, the same last ten quiet minutes. A baby reads the sequence far more than the furniture.

If you're also at the point of stopping the wrap, don't stack it on this week — When Should You Stop Swaddling Your Baby? covers that timing separately, and separately is the point.

3. Let the Room Change on Its Own Week

For many families the crib also lives in a different room. That's two changes, and they don't have to arrive together: move the crib into your room first if it fits, or move the baby to the new room while still in the bassinet. Both at once is the hard version.

4. Give Them a Minute Before You Go In

Self soothe is the phrase everyone searches and nobody defines. In practice it's small: a baby who fusses, finds their own hands, and settles again without being picked up. It arrives on its own timeline. The part a parent controls is the pause — a few seconds before responding is often the difference between a baby who resettles and one who wakes fully.

5. Expect a Few Rough Evenings — and Don't Reverse

Most families describe a short unsettled stretch, then a new normal. Reversing after two hard evenings turns one transition into three. For a sense of how much rest is typical, How Much Sleep Does a Baby Need beats a forum thread at 2 a.m.

The One Thing Worth Buying Before the Move

There isn't much to buy, and that's a feature: a crib needs a firm mattress and a sheet that fits it.

Measure the Mattress, Then Buy the Sheet

Crib mattresses come in more than one size, and the sheet has to match the one you own rather than the one in the photo. Ours come in 28″ × 52″ for a standard crib mattress and 24″ × 38″ for a mini crib. Measuring takes thirty seconds and prevents the most common return.

The fabric is a 96% polyester, 4% spandex jersey knit, and the spandex is the working part: a knit with stretch pulls back against the corners, so the sheet lies flat and stays flat. What else belongs on that mattress isn't ours to rule on — that's what the NICHD page above is for.

Why the Name Goes in the Print, Not on a Tag

Here's our bias, stated plainly. A crib is the most photographed piece of furniture in a house for about a year, and nearly every photo taken over that rail has the sheet in frame. So we treat it as a surface worth designing rather than a utility item.

Three prints, $58 each: Enchanted Vine, Pink Butterfly and Purple Butterfly — the baby's name set into the pattern itself, not on a label nobody sees.

It solves a gift problem too: the presents that arrive weeks after the shower are hard to get right, because the obvious things are already bought. Everything is made to order, one baby only — which is why we say order 2–3 weeks before your due date, and why the spelling you type is the spelling that exists forever.

Common Mistakes Families Make Moving From Bassinet to Crib

Buying the Sheet Before Measuring the Mattress

Standard and mini crib mattresses look similar in a photo and are not interchangeable. Measure first, order second.

Blaming the Bigger Bed for a Sleep Regression

If the hard stretch lines up with four months, the odds are good the furniture is innocent. Changing the bed back adds a second disruption on top of the first.

Changing the Clothes at the Same Time

A new bed and a new sleepwear weight in one week gives you nothing to measure. Pick one. How to Choose the Best Baby Sleepwear for Your Little One and TOG for Fall are worth reading before you change that variable.

Bassinet to Crib: Questions People Ask

When should I move my baby from a bassinet to a crib?

When the bassinet's printed weight limit or its rolling note says so, whichever comes first. There's no consensus month, which is why the label beats the calendar. Confirm the timing for your own baby with your pediatrician.

My baby won't settle in the new bed during the day. What now?

Keep the exposures short and unremarkable, and don't make the first ones the hard hour. If the wrap is still part of your setup, How to Swaddle a Newborn Safely is worth a refresher.

Does a mini crib need a different sheet?

Yes. Ours come in both sizes — 24″ × 38″ and 28″ × 52″. The knit stretches, but not across fourteen inches.

What's a good gift for someone setting up a crib?

Something that fits exactly one baby. Most crib presents are interchangeable, which is why duplicates happen. A personalized crib sheet is the one version that can't be doubled.

Final Thoughts

This move gets written about as a negotiation. Most of the time it's a measurement problem followed by a few boring days: the label says the bassinet is done, the mattress has a size, and the baby needs the same five minutes they had last week in a bed that happens to be larger.

Change one thing, keep everything else, read the pediatric guidance for the parts that are genuinely about safety — and let the rest be unremarkable. The one piece we'd think about beforehand is the sheet, and not only because we make them. It's the surface under every photograph of that first year. It may as well have the right name on it.
